farah & waheedah

Meet our youth mentors, Waheedah (Left) and Farah (Right)! :) The two friends always had a heart to serve the community, and when they saw how MYMCA’s values aligned with theirs, they volunteered to be mentors at our school & community outreach programme, M.Y Mentoring.

Farah saw the opportunity as “a fun opportunity to talk to youths, try to indulge in their world, empower them and at the same time be a listening ear to them”.

their journey

When asked about their takeaways as mentors in MYMCA, they stated that there are more to learn than it is to give. Let’s hear from them:

Waheedah: “Putting myself in our mentees’ shoes, I feel that I would have benefitted a lot from mentoring or activities curated by MYMCA. It allows them to better support themselves through the years where they learn a lot about growing up and about ourselves, or other. I have been empowered through training sessions as it helped to support me as a mentor. I did not have any prior experience in mentoring so the training sessions helped me learn to understand my mentees and facilitate conversations with them.”

Farah:

“What has empowered me along the journey has been the support given at each junction. I took a break after my first cycle, and during my school programme, I saw the staff and they still recognized and remembered my efforts from my first cycle. This made me want to come back and continue on - and since then, I am glad to say I have gotten others to join in the fun too. I think one important lesson that MYMCA taught me was how being a mentor, we are like the MRT cabin simply guiding our mentees to their different destinations. As they go on their own journey and move forward, we must too! Thus I always try to reflect upon my own journey during mentoring because there’s much to give and learn from our mentees too. “

their inspiring moments & encouragements

Waheedah: “One inspiring moment I had while volunteering was that even though I was there to support my mentees, I also learnt things from them! They taught me to have a more positive outlook on life and I learnt to value my life more. I felt more grateful for the little things, challenges and opportunities.”  She would like to tell all youths that "You are never alone!".

Farah: “One of the more inspiring moments along this journey was being able to witness how my mentees go from being super timid to feeling very comfortable in our spaces. it’s heartwarming when after a few weeks i can see myself in them, suddenly they pick up small little traits like how i speak, and also more positive vibes!”

She would also like to tell all youths: “When you are filled with doubt, disrupt your own thoughts and tell yourself, what if you can? assume that you can! 😆 and whenever you fall, bounce back harder and increase your mental toughness💪🏻
